Established automotive clusters, new investment, nearshoring and the shift towards new technologies are strengthening the region’s role within European supply chains.

At the same time, growing industrial complexity brings new challenges. New production sites and supplier networks have to reach stable quality levels quickly, while manufacturers are facing skills shortages, demanding ramp-ups and increasingly complex international supply chains.

We spoke with Gergely Sos, Operational Director Eastern Europe at redi-Group, about the region’s development, the quality challenges manufacturers are facing and why local expertise is becoming increasingly important.

Eastern Europe’s growing role in European manufacturing

Gergely, what role does Eastern Europe play in Europe’s industrial landscape today?

Eastern Europe has developed from a mainly cost-driven production location into a strategically important part of Europe’s industrial network.

The automotive industry remains one of its strongest pillars, supported by an established supplier base, engineering expertise and continued investment. Other sectors, including industrial engineering, electronics, aerospace and defence, rail and logistics, are also gaining importance.

Nearshoring and the growing focus on supply-chain resilience are further strengthening the region. International companies increasingly want production and critical suppliers closer to their European customers, while still benefiting from competitive and flexible operating structures.

Recent investments illustrate the region’s growing strategic importance. German premium automotive OEMs are strengthening their manufacturing presence in Hungary, including investments in new electric models and highly digitalised electric-vehicle production.

These developments show how the role of Eastern Europe within European manufacturing is evolving. The region is becoming increasingly important not only for production, but also for complex engineering activities and international supplier networks.

New investment also creates new quality challenges

What are the biggest challenges international manufacturers and suppliers currently face in Eastern Europe?

One of the biggest challenges is the speed at which new factories, products and supplier networks are expected to become operational.

Production equipment can be installed relatively quickly. Building stable processes, developing qualified suppliers and establishing experienced local organisations takes considerably more time.

This becomes particularly visible during new-site launches and production ramp-ups. Suppliers may have strong technical capabilities while still having to adapt to demanding international customer requirements, structured problem-solving, process audits, APQP or transparent project reporting.

Skills shortages, especially in engineering, quality and technical management positions, add another layer of complexity.

At the same time, supply chains themselves are becoming more demanding. Conventional, hybrid and electric technologies are operating in parallel, often across multiple production locations and supplier levels. A quality issue at a sub-supplier can therefore affect several plants within a very short period.

Customers need two capabilities at the same time: fast local response when an issue occurs and the engineering expertise to identify root causes, stabilise processes and prevent recurrence.

Management representatives of redi-Group Eastern Europe during a regional meeting.

A strong regional engineering network for flexible support

How does redi-Group support companies facing these challenges?

Our approach combines engineering expertise with flexible operational quality support and a regional structure that enables us to support customers across Eastern Europe.

With Budapest as a regional hub, redi-Group coordinates activities across Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Czechia and Poland. This structure allows us to combine local teams and country-specific expertise with consistent project management, quality methods and reporting standards across borders.

We have already established a strong engineering foundation in the region. Romanian, Hungarian and Polish engineers are supporting supplier-development projects at different supplier locations. Their work includes supplier assessments, process analysis, structured problem-solving, action-plan management, production stabilisation and project follow-up.

This means customers can access regional engineering resources that are already operational and can be scaled depending on project requirements, supplier locations and the urgency of the situation.

We are also expanding our operational quality services in the region, initially in Hungary. New production programmes by major automotive manufacturers and their wider supplier networks are creating additional quality requirements during industrialisation and ramp-up.

Depending on the customer’s situation, support can include inspection and rework, Resident Engineering, production support, audits, APQP, supplier development, interim management and digital project reporting.

The key is to connect fast operational response with engineering expertise and sustainable process improvement – from containing an immediate quality issue to stabilising suppliers and processes in the long term.

Local presence and international standards must work together

Based on your experience, what are the key success factors for successful partnerships in Eastern Europe?

The most important success factor is combining local presence with consistent international standards.

Local teams understand the language, business culture and operational realities of the individual countries. They can reach a supplier quickly, communicate directly with both shopfloor and management teams and react without lengthy coordination processes.

This is particularly important during production ramp-ups or critical supplier escalations, where fast decisions and short response times can make a significant difference.

But local flexibility needs a strong framework. Clear project structures, internationally recognised quality methods and transparent reporting ensure that customers receive the same level of professionalism, traceability and communication across different countries.

Trust is another important factor. A strong quality partner communicates openly about the current situation, remaining risks, responsibilities and next steps.

At redi-Group, this regional capability is backed by 30 years of international experience and project expertise gained across a broad global customer base.

This experience provides a common foundation for our regional teams. Local engineers can work flexibly and close to the customer while drawing on established methods, project structures and expertise from the wider redi-Group network.

“The most important success factor is combining local presence with consistent international standards.”

Growing complexity will require broader quality expertise

Looking ahead, which trends will shape manufacturing in Eastern Europe over the coming years?

Electromobility and battery production will remain important drivers, but the transition will continue to be complex.

Conventional, hybrid and electric technologies are likely to coexist for some time. This will increase the need for expertise in areas such as electronics, high-voltage systems, technical cleanliness, traceability and process safety.

Digitalisation and artificial intelligence will also have a growing influence on quality management. Automated inspection, real-time process monitoring and data-based quality analysis will make it possible not only to detect defects, but increasingly to identify process changes before they lead to larger quality problems.

Beyond automotive, I also expect further opportunities in sectors such as aerospace, defence and industrial engineering. These industries bring similarly high requirements for process stability, documentation, supplier performance and traceability.

Sustainability and resource efficiency will also play a greater role.

Supplier development will also become even more important. Companies will need to identify risks earlier, develop suppliers systematically and create robust quality structures across several countries rather than reacting only when a problem has already occurred.

Companies will require partners who can combine local operational capacity, engineering expertise, digital tools and structured supplier development across several countries.

Local expertise for increasingly complex supply chains

Eastern Europe will continue to play an important role in European manufacturing. But as investment, technology and supply-chain complexity increase, the requirements placed on manufacturers and suppliers are changing as well.

Fast reaction times remain essential when quality issues occur. Sustainable quality, however, increasingly depends on process expertise, structured supplier development and the ability to manage projects consistently across borders.

For international companies, the key is to combine global quality expectations with strong local execution. A regional partner with local engineering capabilities and international project experience can help bridge this gap.

Planning a project in Eastern Europe?

Whether you need supplier development, Resident Engineering, audits, production support or rapid operational quality services, redi-Group combines local presence with 30 years of international quality experience.

Talk to our experts about your quality requirements in Eastern Europe.

redi Hungary Bt.
1112 Budapest,
Repülőtéri út 2/A
office.hu@redi-group.com
T +36 70 589 6229

Eastern Europe has become an increasingly important part of Europe’s industrial landscape.
